Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Because I revere our profession and love being a lawyer, I feel both honored and humbled to be a candidate for President-Elect of the State Bar of Texas. We practice in difficult times. I am running because I care about the challenges facing Texas lawyers in the worst economic environment in decades, and because I believe the State Bar can and should help lawyers meet them.
As Chair of the Board of Directors in 2006-07, I worked with the President to move to a policy of engagement on issues confronting our profession, talking with the lawyers of Texas about the issues that matter, conveying their positions to the Legislature and to the Supreme Court, and explaining the value of our profession. Building on the State Bar’s tradition of superb leadership, I will continue this policy and will work to:
- Expand the current Career Center and encourage firms, corporations and governmental entities to use it in their hiring procedures, and provide free professional coaching and volunteer mentors to assist lawyers making transitions
- Pursue efforts to improve health insurance options, and investigate any new opportunities that may arise from current legislative efforts
- Provide excellent and relevant continuing legal education at the lowest cost possible, promote diversity, and help lawyers struggling with depression, addiction or mental illness
- Preserve important historic legal documents which are often scattered and ignored
- Partner with the Texas Young Lawyer’s Association wherever possible. Innovative TYLA projects serve young lawyers, help improve the public perception of our profession, and assist Texans who need help most
- Oppose mandatory disclosure of professional liability insurance. I support the Board’s 39-1 vote against mandatory disclosure.
I make few promises and those I make, I keep. I promise to devote my
time and energy to
strengthen our profession and to make the State Bar of Texas even more
positive and relevant. I need your support to do so. The State Bar needs you. Please join me
in achieving our goals.
Best,
